Visual Merchandising

This week, I went to both luxury, as well as mass retailers to compare and contrast their visual merchandise displays.

For colors, I immediately noticed the pops of neon green in many of the visual displays and merchandise itself. Neon colors are popular this upcoming season, especially hues of green and orange. The luxury displays are where I noticed a lot of popular fashion colors being used, while the mass retailers stuck to a more toned down approach to their displays. I also noticed that the luxury retailers displayed a lot of high priced items, especially handbags, while the mass retailers stuck to full outfit displays with bags as a compliment to the outfit.

I noticed a lot of denim material was used in the mass retail displays, as denim is usually a key item in almost any store. However, I didn’t see much denim material being used in any of the luxury retail displays. I also noted that many mass retailers will stick to basic items, but will change them with different colors and print depending on the season. Like I had previously mentioned, popular fashion colors for the upcoming season are going to be neon hues, so mass retailers are starting to incorporate more of these colors into their merchandise assortment (e.g. Banana Republic).
